Future tense — analytic vs synthetic (będę robić = "I will be doing" vs zrobię = "I will do")

Future tense in Polish — analytic vs synthetic (będę robić vs zrobię)

Polish expresses future actions in two main ways. Which one you use depends mostly on verbal aspect (perfective vs imperfective) and on whether you focus on the result (completion) or the process/duration. This guide explains what each form means, when and why to use it, how to form it, and common mistakes. Examples are in Polish with English translations.

What are the analytic and synthetic futures?

  • Synthetic future: a single-word form built from a perfective verb. Grammatically it looks like the present tense of a perfective verb but its meaning is future. Example: zrobię (I will do), kupię (I will buy).
  • Analytic (periphrastic) future: a compound form using the future of the auxiliary verb być (będę, będziesz, będzie...) plus either the main verb in the infinitive or a past-form (similar to the past tense form). Example: będę robić or będę robił/robiła (I will be doing).

When do I use the synthetic future (e.g., zrobię)?

Use the synthetic future when:
- You use a perfective verb (aspect = dokonany), and
- You mean a single action, or you focus on the result/completion of the action.

Examples:

  • Zrobię obiad. — I will make (finish) dinner.

  • Kupię nowy komputer w przyszłym miesiącu. — I will buy a new computer next month.

  • Zadzwonię do ciebie wieczorem. — I will call you this evening.

  • Negative: Nie zrobię tego. — I won’t do that.

When do I use the analytic future (będę robić)?

Use the analytic future when:
- The verb is imperfective (aspect = niedokonany), or
- You want to emphasize the process, duration, repetition or ongoing nature of the future action.

Two analytic patterns:
1) będę + infinitive (infinitive does not change): będę robić, będziesz robić, będzie robić…
2) będę + past-form (like the past tense) — this form agrees in gender and number: będę robił (m.) / robiła (f.)

Examples:

  • Będę czytać tę książkę w weekend. — I’ll be reading this book over the weekend. (ongoing)

  • Będę dzwonić do ciebie codziennie. — I’ll be calling you every day. (habitual)

  • Nie będę tego robić. — I won’t be doing that.

How do I form each one?

1) Synthetic future (perfective verb): conjugate the perfective verb as if it were present. Example: zrobić

  • ja zrobię — I will do

  • ty zrobisz

  • on/ona/ono zrobi

  • my zrobimy

  • wy zrobicie

  • oni/one zrobią

2) Analytic future (imperfective verb): conjugate być in the future + infinitive or past-form.

  • Future of być: ja będę, ty będziesz, on/ona/ono będzie, my będziemy, wy będziecie, oni/one będą.

Option A — będę + infinitive (infinitive unchanged):

  • ja będę robić

  • ty będziesz robić

  • on będzie robić

  • my będziemy robić

  • wy będziecie robić

  • oni będą robić

Option B — będę + past-form (agrees in gender/number):

  • ja będę robił (m.) / będę robiła (f.)

  • ty będziesz robił / będziesz robiła

  • on będzie robił, ona będzie robiła

  • my będziemy robili (mixed/male) / będziemy robiły (all female)

  • wy będziecie robili / będziecie robiły

  • oni będą robili, one będą robiły

Both analytic patterns are used; będę + infinitive is straightforward and explicit, while będę + past-form is very common in speech and requires agreement.

Examples that show the difference (paired sentences + explanation)

1) Zrobię to jutro. — I will do it tomorrow. (one completed action/result)
Będę to robić jutro. — I’ll be doing it tomorrow. (the action as a process or repeated activity)

2) Przeczytam tę książkę w weekend. — I will (finish) read this book at the weekend. (completion)
Będę czytać tę książkę przez weekend. — I’ll be reading this book over the weekend. (ongoing)

3) Zadzwonię do ciebie wieczorem. — I’ll call you this evening. (one call/result)
Będę dzwonić do ciebie wieczorem. — I’ll be calling you in the evening. (repeated calls / ongoing activity)

4) Kupię bilet. — I’ll buy a ticket. (one-time purchase)
Będę kupował bilety przez cały miesiąc. — I’ll be buying tickets all month. (repeated/persistent action)

5) Pójdę do sklepu. — I’ll go to the shop. (perfective: emphasis on going/arriving)
Jutro idę do sklepu. — I’m going to the shop tomorrow. (present used for planned near future)

6) Nauczę się tych słówek do poniedziałku. — I’ll learn these words by Monday. (result — completed learning)
Będę się uczył tych słówek przez cały weekend. — I’ll be studying these words all weekend. (process)

7) Będzie padać jutro. — It will rain tomorrow. (impersonal analytic future)

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Don’t translate English "will" mechanically. English uses one auxiliary for many meanings; Polish forces you to choose aspect. Example:
  • "I will write the report" meaning you will finish it = Napiszę raport.
  • "I will be writing the report" meaning the activity will be in progress = Będę pisać raport / Będę pisał raport.
  • Wrong: *Będę kupić chleb.* (incorrect mixture of analytic auxiliary with perfective infinitive). Correct: Kupię chleb. or (if you mean repeated/ongoing) Będę kupować chleb.
  • Remember agreement with past-forms. If you use będę + past-form, the past-form must match gender/number: female speaker: Jutro będę pisała list. male speaker: Jutro będę pisał list..
  • Be careful with present-as-future. Present tense with a time adverbial can express a scheduled near-future (e.g., Jutro jadę do Warszawy). This is idiomatic and not a separate future tense.
  • Learn common aspect pairs. Often the perfective partner is formed by adding a prefix (e.g., pisaćnapisać, czytaćprzeczytać, robićzrobić). Some pairs are irregular and must be memorized (jeśćzjeść).

Quick reference: which form to choose?

  • Perfective verb (focus on finished result) -> synthetic future (one-word): e.g., Kupię, Napiszę, Zrobię.
  • Imperfective verb (process, repetition, duration) -> analytic future (będę + infinitive or past-form): e.g., Będę kupować, Będę pisać, Będę robił.

Glossary (simple definitions)

  • Aspect: a feature of Polish verbs that shows whether an action is complete/result (perfective = dokonany) or ongoing/repeated (imperfective = niedokonany).
  • Synthetic future: single-word future form, used with perfective verbs (e.g., zrobię).
  • Analytic future: compound future with auxiliary być (e.g., będę robić or będę robił).
  • Infinitive (bezokolicznik): unconjugated form of a verb, e.g., robić, czytać.
  • Past-form / past participle: forms like robił, robiła, robili used for past tense and in analytic future option B.

Summary

- Polish has two main ways to speak about the future: synthetic (use with perfective verbs to show completion/result) and analytic (use with imperfective verbs to show process/duration/repetition).
- Decide by aspect: if you want the result, use a perfective verb (synthetic future). If you want the ongoing action or repetition, use an imperfective verb and the analytic future.
- Watch gender/number agreement when you use the analytic future with past-forms.

Tip: when in doubt, ask yourself: Do I mean "I will do and finish it" (use perfective → synthetic) or "I will be doing it (process or repeatedly)" (use imperfective → analytic)?

Good luck practicing — noticing whether a Polish sentence describes "doing" (process) or "having done" (result) will help you pick the right future form.
