Conditional mood – basic conditional sentences (gdyby = 'if', gdybym = 'if I')

Conditional mood in Polish — using "gdyby" and "gdybym"

What is the conditional mood (tryb przypuszczający)?
The conditional mood in Polish (tryb przypuszczający) expresses hypothetical situations — things that could happen, would happen, or would have happened, but are not (or were not) real. In English you usually use "would" or "would have" (If I had time, I would go / If you had told me, I would have helped). In Polish the usual structure is: a condition introduced by gdyby (or its personal forms) + a past-tense verb in the condition clause, and a result clause using the past form of the verb with the conditional particle "by" (appearing as -bym/-byś/-by/-byśmy/-byście/-by).

When do I use "gdyby" / "gdybym"?

  • To talk about unreal or hypothetical conditions in the present or future (contrary to fact now): "If I had time now, I would..." -> Gdybym miał czas, poszedłbym.

  • To talk about counterfactual situations in the past (something that didn’t happen): "If you had warned me, I would have helped." -> Gdybyś mnie ostrzegł, pomógłbym ci.

  • To make polite, hypothetical suggestions or soft opinions (less direct than a command).

Note: gdyby is specifically used for hypothetical/contrary-to-fact meaning. For real or likely conditions you often use jeśli/jeżeli (if) or the present tense: Jeśli będzie padać, zostaniemy w domu. (If it rains, we'll stay home.)

How do I form basic conditional sentences with "gdyby" and "gdybym"?
Basic pattern (present/future hypothetical):

  • Condition clause: gdyby + past tense

  • Result clause: past tense + -by (conditional particle)

Because Polish verbs in the past change with person, number and speaker's gender, the conditional particle appears in different forms. Common personal forms of the particle are: bym, byś, by, byśmy, byście, by. These attach to the past form of the verb (usually written as one word): poszedłbym, zrobiłaby, zrobilibyśmy.

Personal forms (quick cheat sheet)

  • 1st sg: gdybym ... -bym

Example: Gdybym miał czas, pojechałbym na koncert. (If I had time, I'd go to the concert.)

  • 2nd sg: gdybyś ... -byś

Example: Gdybyś miał czas, poszedłbyś z nami. (If you had time, you'd go with us.)

  • 3rd sg: gdyby ... -by

Example: Gdyby on miał samochód, jechałby szybciej. (If he had a car, he would drive faster.)

  • 1st pl: gdybyśmy ... -byśmy

Example: Gdybyśmy mieli lepszą pogodę, poszlibyśmy nad morze. (If we had better weather, we'd go to the sea.)

  • 2nd pl: gdybyście ... -byście

Example: Gdybyście byli tutaj, zobaczylibyście to sami. (If you were here, you'd see it yourself.)

  • 3rd pl: gdyby ... -by

Example: Gdyby mieli więcej czasu, zrobiliby to sami. (If they had more time, they would do it themselves.)

Examples of present/future hypothetical (contrary-to-fact now)

  • Gdybym miał pieniądze, kupiłbym nowy komputer.

(If I had money, I'd buy a new computer.)

  • Gdybyś był bardziej ostrożny, nie zrobiłbyś tego błędu.

(If you were more careful, you wouldn't make that mistake.)

  • Gdyby ona miała czas, poszłaby na kurs języka.

(If she had time, she would go to a language course.)

  • Gdybyśmy znaleźli tańsze bilety, pojechalibyśmy wcześniej.

(If we found cheaper tickets, we'd travel earlier.)

  • Gdyby nie padało, poszlibyśmy na spacer.

(If it weren't raining, we would go for a walk.)

Examples of past counterfactual (something that didn't happen in the past)
Polish uses the same basic structure; the condition usually refers to a past action that did not happen.

  • Gdybyś mnie ostrzegł, nie popełniłbym tego błędu.

(If you had warned me, I wouldn't have made that mistake.)

  • Gdybym wiedział o korkach, wyjechałbym wcześniej.

(If I'd known about the traffic, I would have left earlier.)

  • Gdyby oni przyjechali o godzinę wcześniej, zdążyliby na film.

(If they had arrived an hour earlier, they would have made it to the movie.)

Note: Polish relies on verb aspect and context to show that we talk about a past hypothetical. Often the difference between "would" and "would have" in English is handled by perfective/imperfective choices and context in Polish.

Gender and agreement — a short note
Polish past-tense stems and therefore conditional forms show gender (especially in 1st and 3rd person). For example:

  • Male speaker: Gdybym był bogaty, kupiłbym dom.

  • Female speaker: Gdybym była bogata, kupiłabym dom.

So remember to match the verb form to the subject's gender when you speak or write.

Common mistakes and how to fix them

  • Wrong: Gdybym mam czas, poszedłbym.

Correct: Gdybym miał czas, poszedłbym.
(In the conditional clause use the past form, not the present.)

  • Wrong: Gdybym bym miał ... (double "by")

Correct: Gdybym miał ...
(Don't repeat the particle "by" twice.)

  • Wrong: Gdyby był chory, on nie przyjdzie.

Correct: Gdyby był chory, nie przyszedłby.
(The result clause needs the conditional form.)

  • Confusing gdyby and jeśli/jeżeli: use gdyby for unreal/hypothetical meaning; use jeśli/jeżeli for real/possible conditions.

Compare with English (quick mapping)

  • English: If I had time, I would go.

Polish: Gdybym miał czas, poszedłbym.

  • English: If you had told me, I would have helped.

Polish: Gdybyś mi powiedział, pomógłbym ci.
Remember: English uses "would + infinitive"; Polish uses the past form + the particle "by" (attached to the past form).

Short practical tips

  • Use gdyby (or gdybym/gdybyś/gdybyśmy/...) for imagined, unreal situations.

  • Put the past tense in the if-clause: gdyby + past.

  • Use the conditional particle forms (-bym/-byś/-by/...) attached to the past form in the result clause.

  • Pay attention to verb aspect and context to show whether the condition refers to present/future or past.

  • Match gender where required (1st and 3rd persons in past forms).

Glossary (quick definitions)

  • gdyby: conjunction meaning "if" used for hypothetical/contrary-to-fact conditions.

  • gdybym: gdyby + 1st person ending — "if I..." (used at the start of a condition clause).

  • by (and forms bym/byś/by/byśmy/byście/by): the conditional particle that attaches to the past form of the verb to make the conditional mood.

  • Condition clause (protasis): the "if" part (in Polish usually introduced by gdyby).

  • Result clause (apodosis): the main clause that states the hypothetical result, using the conditional form.

Final example set — quick practice reference

  • Gdybym miał czas, pojechałbym z tobą. (If I had time, I'd go with you.)

  • Gdybyś zapytał wcześniej, pomógłbym ci. (If you'd asked earlier, I would have helped you.)

  • Gdyby ona była tu, wszystko byłoby łatwiejsze. (If she were here, everything would be easier.)

  • Gdybyśmy wiedzieli, moglibyśmy przygotować więcej jedzenia. (If we had known, we could have prepared more food.)
