Exemplo (ativo → passivo):
- Active: "The chef cooks the meal." → Passive: "The meal is cooked (by the chef)."
Tradução: Ativo: "O chefe cozinha a refeição." → Passiva: "A refeição é cozinhada (pelo chefe)."
- O agente é desconhecido: "The window was broken." — "A janela foi quebrada."
- O agente é irrelevante: "The rules are changed annually." — "As regras são alteradas anualmente."
- Para destacar o resultado ou a ação (em vez de quem a fez), comum em comunicação formal, ciência e jornalismo: "The experiment was carried out." — "O experimento foi realizado."
- Para evitar atribuir responsabilidade direta: "Mistakes were made." — "Foram cometidos erros."
- Em instruções e avisos: "Passengers are requested to remain seated." — "Solicita-se que os passageiros permaneçam sentados."
Como se forma a voz passiva: regra geral
- Presente simples: is/are + past participle → "The letter is sent." (A carta é enviada.)
- Passado simples: was/were + past participle → "The letter was sent." (A carta foi enviada.)
- Presente perfeito: has/have been + past participle → "The letter has been sent." (A carta foi enviada / já foi enviada.)
Negativas e perguntas
- Negativa: "The report is not finished."
"The report hasn't been finished." (dependendo do tempo)
- Pergunta: "Is the work being done?"
"Has the work been done?"
- Errado: "The book was wrote."
Voz passiva com verbos modais
Exemplos:
- "They can open the door." → "The door can be opened."
(A porta pode ser aberta.)
- "They must finish the report." → "The report must be finished."
(O relatório deve ser terminado.)
- "She should send the email." → "The email should be sent."
(O e-mail deveria ser enviado.)
- Pergunta com modal: "Can the windows be opened?"
(Podem as janelas ser abertas?)
- Negativa com modal: "The problem can't be solved."
(O problema não pode ser resolvido.)
Exemplos:
- Active: "They should have delivered the package."
Passive: "The package should have been delivered."
(O pacote deveria ter sido entregue.)
- "He might have stolen the money." → "The money might have been stolen."
(O dinheiro pode ter sido roubado.)
- "They must have seen it." → "It must have been seen."
(Deve ter sido visto.)
Exemplo (gramatical, mas raro):
- "They should be repairing the road." (ativo progressivo) → "The road should be being repaired."
Tradução: (A estrada deveria estar a ser reparada.)
Forma recomendada: "They should be repairing the road." ou "Repairs should be happening on the road."
- "Have to" funciona como um semi-modal: "You have to finish the form." → "The form has to be finished."
- "Need" como verbo principal: "The house needs to be painted."
- "Ought to": "They ought to inform us." → "We ought to be informed."
- "Be allowed to" (permissão): passiva com sentido diferente — muitas vezes mantém-se a estrutura ativa com sujeito de pessoa: "He was allowed to leave." → (Ele teve permissão para sair / Foi-lhe permitido sair.)
- Estrutura: am/is/are + past participle
- Active: "People speak English here."
- Estrutura: was/were + past participle
- Active: "They built the bridge in 1999."
- Estrutura: am/is/are + being + past participle
- Active: "They are painting the house."
- Estrutura: was/were + being + past participle
- Active: "They were repairing the road when it rained."
- Estrutura: has/have been + past participle
- Active: "They have finished the job."
- Estrutura: had been + past participle
- Active: "They had sent the invitations."
- Will: will + be + past participle
- Active: "They will announce the results."
- Be going to: am/is/are going to + be + past participle
- Active: "They are going to build a hospital."
- Estrutura: will have been + past participle
- Active: "They will have completed the project by June."
- Present perfect continuous passive: has/have been being + past participle
- Ex.: "The house has been being painted for two weeks."
- Past perfect continuous passive é igualmente possível, mas raríssimo.
Passiva com infinitivos, gerúndios e frases com 'to'
- Usa-se depois de muitos verbos e adjetivos: "He wants to be invited."
- Verbo com objeto + infinitivo passivo: "They expected him to be promoted."
- Infinitivo perfeito passivo: to have been + past participle (passado em relação ao ponto de referência)
- Ex.: "He is believed to have been involved."
- Depois de preposições e como sujeito: "After being told, she left."
- "Being + past participle" aparece com frequência em estruturas nominais: "Being invited surprised him."
Agentes (by) e quando omiti-los
- Indica quem realizou a ação: "The novel was written by Jane Austen."
- É opcional quando o agente é óbvio, desconhecido ou irrelevante: "The window was broken." (agente omitido)
- Agente desconhecido: "My bike was stolen."
- Agente evidente pelo contexto: "The law was passed last week."
- Para evitar culpar alguém diretamente: "Mistakes were made."
Erros comuns e como evitá-los
- Esquecer o 'be' com modais: "The work must finished" (errado) → "The work must be finished" (certo).
- Usar "was been" ou combinações impossíveis: "The letter was been sent" (errado) → "The letter was sent" ou "The letter has been sent".
- Tentar passivar verbos intransitivos: "He died" → não se diz "He was died". Alguns verbos não aceitam voz passiva porque não têm objeto.
- Particípio errado: "He was wrote" (errado) → "He was written" (mas geralmente faz pouco sentido; melhores exemplos: "The book was written by her").
- Excesso de passiva: torna o texto vago e impessoal. Prefira voz ativa quando o agente for importante.
- Evite o "modal + be + being + past participle" quando soa pesado. Reescreva em ativo ou com outra expressão.
- Ex.: em vez de "The road should be being repaired", prefira "They should be repairing the road" ou "Repairs should be happening on the road."
- Para falar do passado com dedução, use "modal + have + been + past participle": "The window might have been left open."
Dicas práticas e equivalências em português
- Regra curta: Passive = be + past participle. Conjugue o be no tempo que você precisa.
- Para modais simples: modal + be + past participle (ex.: "can be done").
- Para modais do passado/possibilidade passada: modal + have + been + past participle (ex.: "must have been done").
Em passiva, o auxiliar principal é be.
- Modal verb (verbo modal): can, could, may, might, must, shall, should, will, would, ought to, etc.
- Agent (agente): quem executa a ação; em passiva, normalmente introduzido por by.
- Perfect modal passive: construção modal + have + been + past participle.
- A voz passiva é formada por be + past participle.
- Com modais use: modal + be + past participle (para o presente/futuro/modal simples) ou modal + have + been + past participle (para referência ao passado).
- Formas progressivas passivas existem (be + being + past participle) e podem combinar com modais (modal + be + being + past participle), mas são raras e normalmente evitadas em favor de reescritas.
- Verifique irregularidades no past participle e evite passivar verbos intransitivos.
