- Direct: John said, "I am tired." (John disse: "Estou cansado.")
- Reported: John said (that) he was tired.

Regra resumida
- Reporting verb no passado (said, told, asked) -> normalmente recuamos os tempos.
- Reporting verb no presente/present perfect -> normalmente não recuamos.
- Se a informação continua verdadeira (verdade universal, situação ainda válida), o recuo é opcional.

Exemplos:
- Reporting verb no passado (backshift):
- Direct: "I live in London." (Eu moro em Londres.)
- Reported: She said (that) she lived in London. (Ela disse que morava em Londres.)

- Reporting verb no presente (sem backshift):
- Direct: "I live in London." (Eu moro em Londres.)
- Reported: She says (that) she lives in London. (Ela diz que mora em Londres.)

- Verdade universal (sem backshift necessário):
- Direct: "Water boils at 100°C." (A água ferve a 100°C.)
- Reported: He said (that) water boils at 100°C.

- Present Simple -> Past Simple
- Direct: "I work every day." (Eu trabalho todos os dias.)
- Reported: He said (that) he worked every day. (Ele disse que trabalhava todos os dias.)

- Present Continuous -> Past Continuous
- Direct: "I am studying now." (Estou a estudar/agora.)
- Reported: She said she was studying then. (Ela disse que estava a estudar então.)

- Present Perfect -> Past Perfect
- Direct: "I have finished the report." (Terminei o relatório.)
- Reported: He said he had finished the report. (Ele disse que tinha terminado o relatório.)

- Present Perfect Continuous -> Past Perfect Continuous
- Direct: "I have been waiting for an hour." (Tenho esperado uma hora.)
- Reported: She said she had been waiting for an hour.

- Past Simple -> Past Perfect
- Direct: "I bought a car yesterday." (Comprei um carro ontem.)
- Reported: He said he had bought a car the day before.

- Past Continuous -> Past Perfect Continuous
- Direct: "I was cooking when he arrived." (Estava a cozinhar quando ele chegou.)
- Reported: She said she had been cooking when he arrived.

- Direct: "I had already left." (Eu já tinha saído.)
- Reported: He said he had already left. (Ele disse que já tinha saído.)

- Will -> Would (futuro no passado)
- Direct: "I will help you." (Eu vou ajudar-te.)
- Reported: She said (that) she would help me. (Ela disse que me ajudaria.)

- Going to -> Was/Were going to
- Direct: "I am going to call you tomorrow." (Vou ligar-te amanhã.)
- Reported: He said he was going to call me the next day. (Ele disse que ia ligar-me no dia seguinte.)

Nota sobre modais
- Can -> could
- "I can swim." -> She said she could swim. (Ela disse que sabia nadar.)
- May -> might
- "I may come." -> He said he might come. (Ele disse que poderia vir.)
- Must (obrigação) -> had to
- "I must leave now." -> She said she had to leave then. (Ela disse que tinha de sair então.)
- Must (dedução) pode ficar unchanged (às vezes) ou passar para had to depending on meaning
- "He must be at home." -> She said he must be at home.
- Should, could (passado modal) muitas vezes não mudam: should -> should; could -> could
- "You should see a doctor." -> He said I should see a doctor.

Exemplos:
- Direct: Mary said, "I will call you." (Mary disse: "Vou ligar-te.")
- Reported: Mary said (that) she would call me.

- I -> he / she / they (dependendo de quem fala)
- We -> they / we (consoante contexto)
- You -> I / he / she / them (depende de quem era o interlocutor)
- My / your / their etc. também mudam para refleter a nova relação.

- today -> that day
- tonight -> that night
- tomorrow -> the next day / the following day
- yesterday -> the day before / the previous day
- now -> then
- here -> there
- this -> that
- these -> those
- next week -> the following week / the week after
- ago -> before

Exemplos:
- Direct: "I will finish it tomorrow." (Vou terminar amanhã.)
- Reported: He said he would finish it the next day. (Ele disse que o terminaria no dia seguinte.)

- Direct: "I met her here yesterday." (Encontrei-a aqui ontem.)
- Reported: He said he had met her there the day before. (Ele disse que a tinha encontrado ali no dia anterior.)

Perguntas em discurso indireto

Yes/No questions
- Use if / whether + statement word order (sujeito + verbo).

Exemplo:
- Direct: "Do you like coffee?" (Gostas/Você gosta de café?)
- Reported: She asked if I liked coffee. (Ela perguntou se eu gostava de café.)

- Direct: "Are they coming?" (Eles vêm?)
- Reported: He asked whether they were coming. (Ele perguntou se eles vinham.)

Wh-questions (Who, What, Where, When, Why, How, Which, Whose, Whom)
- Mantém a palavra interrogativa e usa ordem afirmativa (sujeito + verbo).

Exemplo:
- Direct: "Where do you live?" (Onde vives?/Onde você mora?)
- Reported: He asked where I lived. (Ele perguntou onde eu morava.)

- Direct: "Why did she leave early?" (Por que ela saiu cedo?)
- Reported: They wanted to know why she had left early.

- Pedidos/ordens -> verbo + object + to-infinitive (told/asked someone to do something)

Exemplos:
- Direct: "Please open the window." (Por favor, abre a janela.)
- Reported: He asked me to open the window. (Ele pediu-me para abrir a janela.)

- Direct: "Don't touch this." (Não toques nisto.)
- Reported: She told us not to touch that. (Ela disse-nos para não tocar nisso.)

Imperativos, sugestões, ofertas e recomendações

- Imperativos/ordens: tell/order + object + to + infinitive
- "Sit down!" -> He told me to sit down. (Ele mandou-me sentar.)

- Pedidos: ask + object + to + infinitive
- "Please help me." -> She asked me to help her. (Ela pediu que eu a ajudasse.)

- Ofertas: offer + to + infinitive
- "I'll help you." -> He offered to help me. (Ele ofereceu-se para ajudar-me.)

- Sugestões: suggest + (that) + subject + (should) + base form OR suggest + -ing
- "Let's go to the cinema." -> He suggested (that) we go to the cinema. / He suggested going to the cinema. (Ele sugeriu irmos ao cinema.)
- "You should try this." -> She suggested I should try that. / She suggested I try that. (Ela sugeriu que eu experimentasse aquilo.)

- Recomendações formais: recommend + (that) + subject + base form OR recommend + object + to-infinitive
- "See a doctor." -> He recommended that I see a doctor. (Ele recomendou que eu visse um médico.)

Modais avançados e exceções

Resumo das mudanças comuns de modais
- will -> would
- can -> could
- may -> might
- must (obrigação) -> had to
- must (dedução) -> pode permanecer must ou mudar para might/had to dependendo do significado
- should/could/would -> muitas vezes não mudam
- ought to -> ought to (ou should)

Exemplos:
- Direct: "I can finish it." -> Reported: He said he could finish it.
- Direct: "You must see this." -> Reported: She said I had to see that.
- Direct: "He must be home." (dedução) -> Reported: She said he must be home.

- Primeira condicional (real futuro): "If it rains, I will stay." -> Backshift: He said that if it rained, he would stay.
- Segunda condicional (hipótese no presente): "If I were rich, I would travel." -> Muitas vezes permanece igual: He said that if he were rich, he would travel (não é necessário mudar).
- Terceira condicional (hipótese passada): "If I had studied, I would have passed." -> He said that if he had studied, he would have passed (não muda se já está em past perfect) ou às vezes: He said that if he had studied, he would have passed.

- She says, "I'm tired." -> She says she is tired.

- Direct: "The sun rises in the east." -> Reported: He said the sun rises in the east.

- say + (that) + clause (that é muitas vezes opcional)
- He said (that) he was tired.

- tell + object + (that) + clause (object geralmente obrigatório)
- She told me (that) she was tired. (Não: She told that...)

- ask + object + to + verb / ask + if/whether + clause
- He asked me to open the door.
- He asked if I liked coffee.

- advise, warn, remind, promise, offer, suggest, recommend têm padrões próprios:
- advise/ask/warn + object + to + infinitive: She advised me to take a taxi.
- promise + to-infinitive: He promised to help.
- offer + to-infinitive: She offered to drive us.
- suggest + that + subject + base form OR suggest + -ing: He suggested we leave early. / He suggested leaving early.

Erros comuns a evitar

- Não mudar o pronome: Direct: "I love you." -> Errado: He said he loves you. Correto: He said (that) he loved her/him/me (dependendo do contexto).

- Esquecer de ajustar expressões de tempo: "She said she would come tomorrow." (quando reporting verb no passado) -> Correto: ...the next day/the following day.

- Usar ordem interrogativa em reported questions: Errado: He asked, "Where are you?" -> He asked where are you. Correto: He asked where I was.

- Confundir "say" e "tell": say não leva objeto obrigatório; tell normalmente requer objeto.
- Errado: She told that she was late. (incorreto)
- Certo: She said that she was late. / She told me that she was late.

1) Direct: "I have been working here since January," he said to me.
- Reported: He told me (that) he had been working there since January.
- (Ele disse-me que trabalhava lá desde Janeiro.)
- Mudanças: present perfect continuous -> past perfect continuous; here -> there; me (object mantém-se como objecto).

2) Direct: "If I win the lottery, I'll buy a house," she said.
- Reported: She said that if she won the lottery, she would buy a house.
- Mudanças: first conditional -> passado modal (will -> would); present simple -> past simple (if-clause).

3) Direct: "Where have you been?" the teacher asked the student.
- Reported: The teacher asked the student where he had been.
- (O professor perguntou ao aluno onde ele tinha estado.)

4) Direct: "Don't be late," she told him.
- Reported: She told him not to be late.
- (Ela disse-lhe para não se atrasar.)

5) Direct: "I'll pick you up at 8 p.m. tomorrow," he promised.
- Reported: He promised that he would pick me up at 8 p.m. the next day.
- (Ele prometeu que me apanharia às 20h no dia seguinte.)

Dicas práticas para transformar frases

1. Identifica o reporting verb e o seu tempo (said/said to/asked/...) – isso indica se haverá backshift.
3. Ajusta os advérbios de tempo e lugar (today -> that day; here -> there).
5. Para perguntas: usa if/whether para yes/no; mantém o wh-word e coloca sujeito + verbo.
6. Para pedidos/ordens: usa to-infinitive (told/asked someone to ...).
