Kontrasta un koncesijas izteikšana (despite, in spite of, even though)
B2Kā angļu valodā izteikt kontrastu un piekāpšanos ar 'despite', 'in spite of' un 'even though'
'despite' un 'in spite of' nozīmē „neskatoties uz…”.
- Despite the rain, we went for a walk. — Neskatoties uz lietu, mēs gājām pastaigā.
- In spite of the rain, we went for a walk. — Neskatoties uz lietu, mēs gājām pastaigā.
- She passed the exam despite her lack of preparation. — Viņa izgāja eksāmenu neskatoties uz sagatavošanās trūkumu.
- In spite of being tired, he kept working. — Neskatoties uz nogurumu, viņš turpināja strādāt.
Svarīgi punkti:
- 'despite' ir viens vārds; 'in spite of' ir trīs vārdus.
- Even though it was raining, we went out. — Lai gan lija, mēs izgājām ārā.
- He succeeded even though he had very little experience. — Viņam izdevās, lai gan viņam bija ļoti maz pieredzes.
Atšķirība no 'although': 'even though' ir spēcīgāks/uzsverīgāks par 'although' (abi apvieno/pilina kontrastu, bet 'even though' biežāk signalizē pārsteigumu vai negaidītu rezultātu).
Kā veidot teikumus ar 'despite' un 'in spite of'?
Forma
- despite + noun/noun phrase: Despite the traffic, I arrived on time.
- in spite of + noun/noun phrase: In spite of the traffic, I arrived on time.
- despite + -ing (gerund): Despite feeling sick, she went to work.
- in spite of + -ing: In spite of feeling sick, she went to work.
Svarīgi: 'despite' un 'in spite of' nevar tieši stāvēt pirms pilna teikuma (clause) ar subjektu un predikātu. Nepareizi: *Despite he was tired. Pareizi: Despite the fact that he was tired / Even though he was tired.
Uzrakstītas alternatīvas, kad gribat lietot pilnu klausu
- Despite the fact that + clause: Despite the fact that he was tired, he continued working. — Šī konstrukcija ļauj izmantot 'despite' sekojošas pilnas teikuma daļas, taču tā ir garāka un stilistiski „smagnēja”.
Bagātīgi piemēri ar tulkojumiem
- Despite the cold, she went swimming. — Neskatoties uz aukstumu, viņa devās peldēties.
- She went swimming despite the cold. — Viņa devās peldēties, neskatoties uz aukstumu.
- Despite being late, he calmly explained the situation. — Neskatoties uz to, ka viņš kavējās, viņš mierīgi izskaidroja situāciju.
- In spite of his protests, they changed the plan. — Neskatoties uz viņa protestiem, viņi mainīja plānu.
- In spite of everything, they remained friends. — Neskatoties uz visu, viņi palika draugi.
- Despite the loud music, I managed to sleep. — Neskatoties uz skaļo mūziku, man izdevās aizmigt.
- Despite not having much money, she bought the ticket. — Neskatoties uz to, ka viņai nebija daudz naudas, viņa nopirka biļeti.
- 'in spite of' dažkārt liek uzsvaru uz pretestību („in spite of” var skanēt mazliet spēcīgāk), bet praktiskā lietojumā tie ir ļoti līdzīgi.
Kā veidot teikumus ar 'even though'?
Forma
- even though + clause (subject + verb)
Piemēri:
- Even though she was tired, she finished the report. — Lai gan viņa bija nogurusi, viņa pabeidza ziņojumu.
- I stayed at home even though the weather was nice. — Es paliku mājās, lai gan laiks bija labs.
- Even though he had very little practice, he played very well. — Lai gan viņam bija ļoti maz prakses, viņš spēlēja ļoti labi.
Vietas maiņa un komati
- Ja klauss ar 'even though' stāv teikuma sākumā, pēc tās bieži seko komats: Even though it was late, she continued reading.
- Ja 'even though' klauss stāv teikuma beigās, komats parasti nav obligāts: She continued reading even though it was late.
- Present: Even though he is busy, he helps me. — Lai gan viņš ir aizņemts, viņš man palīdz.
- Past: Even though they were warned, they ignored the signs. — Lai gan viņus brīdināja, viņi ignorēja zīmes.
- Future: Even though it will be difficult, I will try. — Lai gan tas būs grūti, es centīšos.
Galvenās atšķirības un salīdzinājums
- 'despite' / 'in spite of' ⇄ 'even though'
- Dažos teikumos var aizvietot, bet forma mainīsies. Piemēram: "Despite the rain, we went out." → "Even though it was raining, we went out." (šajā gadījumā kļūst no prepozicionālas frāzes par klausu ar saikli 'even though').
- Tomēr nevar tieši likt 'despite' priekš pilnas klausas (subjekt + darbības vārds). Ja gribat izmantot klausu, izmantojiet 'even though' vai pievienojiet "the fact that": "Despite the fact that it was raining...".
- 'despite' — īss, bieži formāls. Labs rakstīšanai.
- 'in spite of' — mazliet izteiksmīgāks, bieži lietots runātajā valodā arī rakstībā.
- 'even though' — uzsver kontrastu vai pārsteigumu; biežāk izmantots, ja seko pilna teikuma daļa.
- 'even if' — nav tas pats kā 'even though'. 'Even if' runā par hipotēzi (pat ja tas notiks), 'even though' runā par realitāti (tas notika vai ir patiess).
Piemērs, kas ilustrē atšķirību ar 'even if':
- Even if it rains, we'll go to the park.
- Even though it rained, we went to the park. (fakts)
Biežākās kļūdas un kā tās labot
1. "Despite of" — neatļauts
- Nepareizi: *Despite of the problems, they continued.*
- Pareizi: Despite the problems, they continued. / In spite of the problems, they continued.
2. 'despite' priekšā pilna klausa bez "the fact that"
- Nepareizi: *Despite he was tired, he went out.*
- Pareizi: Even though he was tired, he went out. / Despite the fact that he was tired, he went out.
3. "In spite" bez "of"
- Nepareizi: *In spite the rain, we went out.*
- Pareizi: In spite of the rain, we went out.
4. 'Despite' + person + -ing: stilistiska izvēle
- Abi varianti redzami praksē: Despite his being late, we started without him. / Despite him being late, we started without him.
- Stilistiski formālāk: Despite his being late. Ikdienas runā biežāk: Despite him being late.
5. Sajaukšana ar 'even if'
- Nepareizi: *Even if it was raining, we went out.* (šis teikums var izklausīties dīvaini, jo 'even if' parasti paredz hipotētisku situāciju)
- Pareizi: Even though it was raining, we went out. (ja lieta notika)
Punktuācija un vārdu kārta
- Ja izmantojat 'even though' vai prepozicionālu frāzi (despite/in spite of) teikuma sākumā, parasti liek komatu pēc tās: Even though it was late, she kept working. / Despite the storm, the school remained open.
- Ja šī daļa nāk teikuma beigās, komats parasti nav nepieciešams: She kept working even though it was late. / The school remained open despite the storm.
- 'In spite of' parasti seko tieši objekts: In spite of the noise, he slept. (nevis 'in spite the noise')
Salīdzinājums ar citiem līdzīgiem izteicieniem
Although vs Even though
- Although she was tired, she continued. (mazāk uzsvērti)
- Even though she was tired, she continued. (spēcīgāks uzsvars — pārsteigums vai negaidītība)
Even though vs Even if
- Even though it snowed, they went out. (tas tiešām sniga)
- Even if it snows tomorrow, we'll still go. (hipotēze — pat ja tas var notikt)
Glosārijs (īsas definīcijas)
Preposition (prepozīcija) — vārds, kas parasti stāv pirms lietvārda un norāda attiecības (piem., in, on, despite).
Subordinating conjunction (pakārtots saiklis) — saiklis, kas ievada pakārtotu klausu: even though, although, if.
Kopsavilkums — ko atcerēties
- "Despite" un "in spite of" nozīmē "neskatoties uz" un pieņem lietvārdu vai -ing formu: despite the rain / in spite of feeling ill.
- "Even though" ir saiklis, kas ievada pilnu klausu (subject + verb): Even though it was late, I left.
- Neizmantojiet "despite" tieši pirms pilnas klausas (bez "the fact that"). Nepareizi: *Despite he was late.*
- "Even if" nav tas pats — tas runā par hipotēzi; "even though" runā par faktu.
- Izvēlieties "despite" vai "in spite of" atkarībā no stila; "despite" parasti ticamāk rakstiskā, kodolīgā valodā.
