Esempi base:
- Direct: "Anna said, 'I am tired.'"
Reported: Anna said (that) she was tired.
Traduzione: Anna ha detto che era stanca.

- Direct: "John said, 'I will come tomorrow.'"
Reported: John said (that) he would come the next day.

Nota: in inglese il "that" dopo verbi come "said" è spesso opzionale: "He said (that) he was tired." Invece "tell" richiede un complemento oggetto: "She told me (that) she was tired." (Non si dice *"She told that she...".)

- Present simple -> Past simple
Direct: "I live in London." -> Reported: He said he lived in London.
Traduzione: Ha detto che viveva a Londra.

- Present continuous -> Past continuous
Direct: "I am studying now." -> Reported: She said she was studying then.
Traduzione: Ha detto che stava studiando in quel momento.

- Present perfect -> Past perfect
Direct: "I have finished the work." -> Reported: He said he had finished the work.

- Past simple -> Past perfect
Direct: "I bought a car." -> Reported: She said she had bought a car.

- Past continuous -> Past perfect continuous
Direct: "I was working all day." -> Reported: He said he had been working all day.

- Will -> would
Direct: "I will help you." -> Reported: He said he would help me.
Traduzione: Ha detto che mi avrebbe aiutato.

- Be going to -> was/were going to
Direct: "I'm going to move next month." -> Reported: She said she was going to move the following month.

- can -> could
Direct: "I can swim." -> Reported: He said he could swim.
Traduzione: Ha detto che sapeva nuotare.

- may -> might
Direct: "She may come." -> Reported: He said she might come.
Traduzione: Ha detto che poteva venire.

- will -> would (volontà o predizione)
Direct: "I will call you." -> Reported: He said he would call me.
Traduzione: Ha detto che mi avrebbe chiamato.

- shall -> should (spesso formale o nell'uso con I/we)
Direct: "I shall return on Monday." -> Reported: He said he should return on Monday.
Traduzione: Ha detto che sarebbe tornato lunedì.

- must -> had to (obbligo)
Direct: "I must leave now." -> Reported: He said he had to leave then.
Traduzione: Ha detto che doveva partire subito.

Nota sui modali e deduzioni: se "must" esprime deduzione logica (epistemic), spesso non si cambia perché la deduzione può essere ancora valida: "He said, 'She must be at home.'" -> "He said she must be at home." Tuttavia per obblighi si preferisce "had to".

Domande: come si riportano?

- Yes/no questions: si usa if/whether + ordine normale (soggetto + verbo), senza inversione.
Direct: "Are you coming?" -> Reported: He asked if I was coming.
Traduzione: Mi ha chiesto se stavo venendo.

Direct: "Do you like coffee?" -> Reported: She asked whether I liked coffee.

- WH-questions: si mantiene la parola interrogativa (who, what, where, when, why, how) e si usa l'ordine affermativo (soggetto + verbo).
Direct: "Where did you go last night?" -> Reported: He asked where I had gone the night before.

- Questions with reporting with object:
Direct: "Can you help me?" -> Reported: He asked me to help him. (richiesta: pattern con to-infinitive)
Traduzione: Mi ha chiesto di aiutarlo.

Nota: non si mantiene l'inversione tipica delle domande dirette: è sbagliato dire *"He asked where did I go."* -> corretto: "He asked where I had gone."

Comandi, richieste, consigli, suggerimenti

- Imperativi (ordini) -> told/ordered + to-infinitive
Direct: "Close the door!" -> Reported: He told me to close the door.

Direct: "Don't touch that!" -> Reported: She warned us not to touch that.

- Richieste (could you / would you / please) -> asked + object + to-infinitive
Direct: "Could you open the window?" -> Reported: He asked me to open the window.

- Consigli e suggerimenti
Direct: "You should see a doctor." -> Reported: She advised me to see a doctor. / She said that I should see a doctor.

Direct: "Let's go now." -> Reported: He suggested (that) we go then. / He suggested going then.
Traduzione: Ha suggerito di andare allora.

- Promesse e offerte
Direct: "I'll help you." -> Reported: He promised (that) he would help me. / He promised to help me.

- Direct: "I suggest, 'He see a doctor.'" (forma diretta spesso: "I suggest that he see a doctor.")
Reported: She suggested that he see a doctor.

She suggested that he should see a doctor.

Esempio con insist:
Direct: "Insist: 'He leave now.'" -> Reported: He insisted that he leave at once.

Pronomi (alcuni esempi):
- I -> he / she
- we -> they / we (dipende dal contesto)
- you -> I / he / she / they (dipende a chi si riferiva)
- my -> his / her
- our -> their

Avverbi di tempo e luogo più comuni:
- now -> then
- today -> that day
- yesterday -> the day before / the previous day
- tomorrow -> the next day / the following day
- tonight -> that night
- here -> there
- this -> that
- these -> those
- ago -> before
- last week -> the week before / the previous week
- next week -> the following week / the week after

Esempi:
- Direct: "I will come tomorrow," she said. -> Reported: She said she would come the next day.

- Direct: "This is my house," he said. -> Reported: He said that that was his house.

- Direct: "Come here," he said to me. -> Reported: He told me to come there. (o: He told me to come to him.)

Come here" -> "He told me to go there / to come to him." Il contesto decide.

Frasi condizionali e discorso indiretto

Direct: "If you heat water, it boils." -> Reported: He said that if you heat water it boils.

Direct: "If I find her, I'll tell her." -> Reported: He said that if he found her he would tell her.

Direct: "If I won the lottery, I'd buy a house." -> Reported: He said that if he won the lottery he would buy a house.

Direct: "If I'd known, I would have helped." -> Reported: She said that if she had known she would have helped.

Direct: "The Earth orbits the Sun." -> Reported: He said that the Earth orbits the Sun.

Direct: "I am tired," he says. -> Reported: He says he is tired.

- Non cambiare "will" in "would" dopo un reporting verb al passato: sbagliato: *He said he will help.* Corretto: He said he would help.

- Mantenere l'inversione nelle domande riportate: sbagliato: *He asked where did she go.* Corretto: He asked where she had gone.

- Usare "tell" senza oggetto: sbagliato: *She told that she was late.* Corretto: She told me that she was late. (oppure She said that she was late.)

- Non adattare i pronomi e i riferimenti temporali: sbagliato: Direct: "I'll do it tomorrow," -> Reported: He said he'll do it tomorrow. (se il reporting è al passato, correggere: He said he would do it the next day.)

Riepilogo rapido: scheda pratica

- Se il reporting verb è al passato, applica di solito il backshift (present -> past, past -> past perfect, will -> would, can -> could, ecc.).
- Cambia i pronomi e gli avverbi di tempo/luogo secondo la nuova prospettiva (now -> then, today -> that day, here -> there).
- Per domande sì/no usa if/whether + ordine affermativo; per wh-questions mantieni la parola interrogativa e l'ordine soggetto-verbo.
- Imperativi: reported with to-infinitive (He told me to do it / He warned me not to do it).
- Verbi come suggest/recommend/insist + that richiedono spesso la forma base (subjunctive) o "should".

"He said, 'I'm tired.'"
"He said (that) he was tired."
He suggested that she see a doctor).

Esempi aggiuntivi riassuntivi (direct -> reported)
  • "I'm hungry," he said. -> He said (that) he was hungry. (Ha detto che aveva fame.)
  • "We have finished the work," they said. -> They said (that) they had finished the work. (Hanno detto che avevano finito il lavoro.)
  • "Will you come?" she asked. -> She asked if I would come. (Mi ha chiesto se sarei venuto.)
  • "Don't be late," she told him. -> She told him not to be late.
  • "You should save money," my father said. -> My father told me that I should save money.
  • "Why did you leave?" they asked. -> They asked why I had left. (Mi hanno chiesto perché ero partito.)
  • "If I win, I'll travel," he said. -> He said that if he won he would travel.
