In inglese si usano molto per rendere una domanda più cortese o formale: invece di chiedere direttamente 'Where is the station?' si dice spesso 'Could you tell me where the station is?'.

'Could you tell me...').

Esempio (diretta vs indiretta):
- Diretta: 'Where is the station?' - Dov'è la stazione?
- Indiretta (più cortese): 'Could you tell me where the station is?' - Potrebbe dirmi dov'è la stazione?

Come si formano le domande indirette?

Regole principali

Regola 1: Domande WH (who, what, where, when, why, how)
- Struttura: WH-word + soggetto + verbo (ordine dichiarativo, senza inversione).
- Trasformazione: elimina l'inversione del direct question.

Esempi:
- Direct: 'Where is the station?'
Indirect: 'Could you tell me where the station is?'
Traduzione: Potrebbe dirmi dov'è la stazione?

- Direct: 'What time does the train leave?'
Indirect: 'Do you know what time the train leaves?'

- Direct: 'How do I use this printer?'
Indirect: 'Could you show me how I use this printer?'
Traduzione: Può mostrarmi come usare questa stampante?

Errore comune (da evitare):
- Sbagliato: 'Could you tell me where is the station?'
- Corretto: 'Could you tell me where the station is?'

Regola 2: Domande sì/no (yes/no questions)
- Struttura: usa 'if' o 'whether' + soggetto + verbo.

Esempi:
- Direct: 'Is the meeting today?'
Indirect: 'Can you tell me if the meeting is today?' / 'Can you tell me whether the meeting is today?'

- Direct: 'Will he come?'
Indirect: 'Do you know whether he will come?'

- 'Could you tell me...'
- 'Can you tell me...'
- 'Do you know...'
- 'Would you mind telling me...'
- 'I was wondering if/whether...'
- 'Would you happen to know...'
- 'May I ask... / Might I ask...'

Esempi con traduzione:
- 'Could you tell me where the nearest bank is?'
- 'Do you know if the shop is open on Sundays?'
- 'I was wondering if you could help me with this form.'
- 'Would you mind telling me who is responsible for this project?'
- 'Would you happen to know when the office opens?' - Per caso sa quando apre l'ufficio?

Regola 4: Modal verbs e grado di cortesia
- 'Can' = neutro/abbastanza informale.
- 'Could' = più cortese e formale rispetto a 'can'.
- 'Would you mind + -ing' = molto cortese; la risposta richiesta spesso è 'No, not at all' o simile.
- 'I was wondering if...' = formula molto indiretta e cortese.

Esempi (da neutro a molto cortese):
- 'Can you tell me the time?' - Può dirmi l'ora? (neutro)
- 'Could you tell me the time?' - Potrebbe dirmi l'ora? (più cortese)
- 'Would you mind telling me the time?' - Le dispiacerebbe dirmi l'ora? (ancora più cortese)
- 'I was wondering if you could tell me the time.' - Mi chiedevo se potesse dirmi l'ora. (molto indiretto)

Regola 5: Backshifting (discorso indiretto/reporting)

Esempio:
- Direct: She asked, 'Where do you live?'
Reported: She asked where I lived.
Traduzione: Mi ha chiesto dove abitavo.

Nota: nelle richieste di cortesia contemporanee (es. 'Could you tell me...') non è necessario il backshift perché chiedi sul momento presente.

Regola 6: Punteggiatura e intonazione
'Could you tell me where the station is?') termina con '?' come una domanda normale.

Domande WH (informazioni precise)
  • 'Could you tell me where the station is?' - Potrebbe dirmi dov'è la stazione?
  • 'Do you know what time the museum opens?' - Sa a che ora apre il museo?
  • 'Would you mind telling me who I should contact about billing?'
  • 'I was wondering how I can get a replacement ticket.' - Mi chiedevo come posso ottenere un biglietto sostitutivo.
Domande sì/no (if / whether)
  • 'Can you tell me if the meeting is still on?'
  • 'Could you tell me whether the package has arrived?' - Potrebbe dirmi se il pacco è arrivato?
  • 'Do you know if the hotel offers parking?' - Sa se l'hotel offre parcheggio?
  • 'I was wondering whether you could send the files today.' - Mi chiedevo se potesse inviare i file oggi.
Richieste di cortesia e attenuazioni comuni
  • 'Could you possibly tell me where I can buy stamps?' - Potrebbe dirmi dove posso comprare i francobolli?
  • 'Would you mind opening the window?' - Le dispiacerebbe aprire la finestra?
  • 'Would you happen to know the Wi-Fi password?' - Per caso sa la password del Wi-Fi?
  • 'May I ask how long you will be staying?' - Posso chiederle per quanto tempo resterà?
Formale / scrittura professionale
  • 'I would be grateful if you could let me know whether the appointment is confirmed.'
  • 'Could you please inform me when the results are available?'
Esempi in discorso indiretto (reported speech)
  • Direct: 'When will you arrive?' -> Reported: He asked when I would arrive. - Mi ha chiesto quando sarei arrivato.
  • Direct: 'Did she finish the report?' -> Reported: He asked if she had finished the report. - Ha chiesto se avesse finito il rapporto.

Errori comuni da evitare

- Inversione errata nella clausola interna:
- Sbagliato: 'Could you tell me where is the station?'
- Corretto: 'Could you tell me where the station is?'

- Usare l'ausiliare 'do' nella clausola interna (non necessario):
- Sbagliato: 'Do you know what does she do?'
- Corretto: 'Do you know what she does?'

- Confondere 'if' e 'whether' in contesti formali (sebbene spesso entrambi siano accettabili):

- 'He asked me to leave.' (chiede di fare qualcosa)
- 'He asked me where the keys were.' (chiede informazione)

Could you tell me where the station is?'.

-> 'Can you tell me if the meeting is today?'

- Formule di cortesia equivalenti:
- Italiano: 'Mi chiedevo se...' -> Inglese: 'I was wondering if...'
- Italiano: 'Per caso sa...' -> Inglese: 'Would you happen to know...'
- Italiano: 'Mi può dire...' -> Inglese: 'Could you tell me...' / 'Can you tell me...'

Glossario (breve)

- Direct question (domanda diretta): una domanda esplicitamente formulata con inversione o ausiliare ('Where is it?', 'Do you know?').
Could you tell me where it is?').
- WH-word: parole come who, what, where, when, why, how.
- Inversion (inversione): lo spostamento del soggetto dopo il verbo nelle domande dirette ('Is he here?').

- Per domande sì/no usa 'if' o 'whether' + soggetto + verbo.
- Usa 'can/could', 'would you mind', 'I was wondering' per diversi livelli di cortesia.
