"It is essential that he attend")

C1

Verbi tipici: demand, insist, request, suggest, recommend, propose, order, ask, urge.
Esempi:
- "They demanded that the company pay compensation."
- "She insisted that he leave immediately."
- "I suggest that you speak with the teacher."
- "The committee recommended that he be promoted."

Aggettivi e sostantivi tipici: essential, important, necessary, vital, crucial, imperative; requirement, recommendation, demand.
Esempi:
- "It is essential that she be present." — Trad.: "È essenziale che lei sia presente."
- "It is crucial that applicants submit all documents." — Trad.: "È cruciale che i candidati presentino tutti i documenti."
- "There is a requirement that each visitor sign in."

In linguaggio legale, regolamenti, avvisi ufficiali

- "The policy requires that employees wear identification badges." — Trad.: "La politica richiede che i dipendenti indossino cartellini identificativi."
- "It is required that the form be completed in full."

Esempi:
- "It is essential that he attend the meeting." — CORRETTO.
- "I recommend that she study the file carefully." — CORRETTO.
- Verbo be: "It is vital that she be informed." — CORRETTO ("be" rimane "be").
Trad.: "È fondamentale che venga informata."

Nota sulla forma negativa

Nella negazione il "not" si posiziona normalmente prima del verbo base: "that he not attend".
- "It is vital that he not be late."

Omissione di "that"

- "I suggest you take a break." = "I suggest that you take a break."

Forma passiva

Si usa la forma base "be" + participio passato:
- "It is required that the application be signed by the candidate."
- "The board insisted that the minutes be published."

Forma passata (counterfactual): 'were'

- "If I were you, I would apologize." — Trad.: "Se fossi in te, mi scuserei."
- "I wish he were here." — Trad.: "Vorrei che lui fosse qui."

Forme perfette e progressive (nota di stile)

In inglese formale possono comparire costruzioni più rare:
- Perfect subjunctive (molto formale/legale): "It is important that she have finished the report by Monday."
(Questa forma è poco frequente nella lingua parlata; spesso si preferisce: "It is important that she finish the report by Monday." o una costruzione diversa.)
- Progressive subjunctive (raro): "The board requested that he be attending the sessions regularly."

Confronto con altre costruzioni: "should", "to-infinitive", modali

British vs American English: uso di "should"

- In American English il subjunctive è ancora molto usato in contesti formali: "It is essential that he be present."
- In British English è più comune trovare "should" + infinito: "It is essential that he should be present."

Esempi a confronto:
- AmE: "The committee recommended that she be appointed." — (stile diretto, mandative subjunctive)
- BrE: "The committee recommended that she should be appointed." — (stile alternativo)

- "The law requires that applicants submit proof." = "The law requires applicants to submit proof." (sostituire la subordinate clause con un to-infinitive)
- Evitare la ridondanza: non si dice "requires that applicants must" (ridondante). Usare o "requires that applicants submit" o "requires applicants to submit".

Errori comuni e come correggerli

- Errore: aggiungere -s alla terza persona dopo "that":
* Sbagliato: "It is essential that he attends the meeting."
* Corretto: "It is essential that he attend the meeting."

* Sbagliato: "They insisted that she will come."
* Corretto: "They insisted that she come." (oppure: "They insisted she would come" se si riporta una volontà futura già espressa)

- Errore: doppio modale o ridondanza:
* Sbagliato: "The policy requires that employees must sign the form." (ridondante)
* Corretto: "The policy requires that employees sign the form." o "The policy requires employees to sign the form."

- Errore: usare costruzioni italiane direttamente:
* Sbagliato: tradurre letteralmente "Esigo che lui deve andare" → "I demand that he must go." (scorretta/ridondante)
* Corretto: "I demand that he go." o "I demand that he should go." (quest'ultima più tipica BrE)

Esempi estesi e commentati

1) Mandative subjunctive con verbi di comando/suggerimento:
- "The manager ordered that all staff attend the meeting."
- "I suggest that you arrive early." — Trad.: "Suggerisco che tu arrivi presto." (forma comune anche senza "that": "I suggest you arrive early.")

2) Aggettivi che richiedono il subjunctive:
- "It is imperative that the report be submitted on time."
- "It is desirable that candidates have at least three years' experience." (qui "have" è la forma base)

3) Passive:
- "The court demanded that the records be made available."

4) Negazione:
- "The committee requested that the CEO not attend the press conference."

5) If / wish (past subjunctive):
- "If she were here, she could help." — Trad.: "Se lei fosse qui, potrebbe aiutare."
- "I wish I were more confident." — Trad.: "Vorrei essere più sicuro/a."

6) Forma perfetta (molto formale):
- "It was essential that he have completed the training before assuming duties."

- Se scrivi in inglese britannico e il subjunctive ti suona raro, usa "should" + infinito come alternativa: "It is important that he should attend.".

Glossario rapido

- Mandative subjunctive: il subjunctive usato per comandi, richieste, raccomandazioni (es.: "that he attend").
- Bare infinitive (forma base): l'infinito senza "to"; in subjunctive si usa la forma base (es.: "attend", "be").
- Past subjunctive (were): uso di "were" per situazioni ipotetiche o irreali (es.: "If I were").
- Passive subjunctive: costruzione con "be" + participio passato (es.: "that the form be signed").

- Nella mandative subjunctive si usa la forma base del verbo (no -s alla terza persona): "that he attend", "that she be".
- In inglese britannico è comune l'uso di "should" come alternativa: "that he should attend".
- Evita gli errori più frequenti: non mettere -s, non usare "must" dopo "requires that" (ridondante), e non tradurre letteralmente dall'italiano senza controllare la struttura.
