The problem

Language ability is not just vocabulary + grammar

Many students attempt to learn a language by simply memorizing vocabulary and learning grammar rules.

This approach seems logical but hides a critical flaw.

The result is often a process of consciously constructing sentences by recalling words, applying the rules, and assembling them piece by piece.

This conscious effort creates halting speech, impairs our ability to express our thoughts spontaneously, and is very different from the instinctive command of the language that characterizes true fluency.

To achieve fluency, you must develop automaticity in the language.

automaticity
/ˌɔːtəməˈtɪsəti/ noun
The ability to perform a skill quickly and accurately with little or no conscious effort.
“A high volume of repeated exposure and production is how learners develop automaticity in recognizing and producing the fundamental patterns of the language.”

The goal is not to memorize the sentences themselves, but to develop the muscle memory necessary to spontaneously produce and understand your own sentences in conversation.
