"I live in London." (directo) -> He said (that) he lived in London.

Ejemplos:
- Backshift normal: She said, "I am hungry." -> She said (that) she was hungry.
Traducción: "Ella dijo: 'Tengo hambre'." -> "Ella dijo que tenía hambre."
- Sin backshift (report verb en presente / verdad general): The scientist says, "Water boils at 100°C." -> The scientist says that water boils at 100°C.

- Present simple -> Past simple
"I like coffee." -> He said (that) he liked coffee.
"Me gusta el café." -> "Dijo que le gustaba el café."

- Present continuous -> Past continuous
"I am studying now." -> She said (that) she was studying then.
"Estoy estudiando ahora." -> "Ella dijo que estaba estudiando entonces."

- Present perfect -> Past perfect
"I have finished my homework." -> He said (that) he had finished his homework.
"He terminado los deberes." -> "Dijo que había terminado los deberes."

- Past simple -> Past perfect
"I saw Mary yesterday." -> He said (that) he had seen Mary the day before.
"Vi a Mary ayer."

- Past continuous -> Past perfect continuous
"I was working at 9pm." -> He said (that) he had been working at 9pm.
"Estaba trabajando a las 9pm." -> "Dijo que había estado trabajando a las 9pm."

- Past perfect -> (normalmente no cambia)
"I had already left." -> He said (that) he had already left.
"Ya me había ido." -> "Dijo que ya se había ido."

- Will -> would
"I will call you tomorrow." -> He said (that) he would call me the next day.
"Te llamaré mañana." -> "Dijo que me llamaría al día siguiente."

- Be going to -> was/were going to (o had + intención)
"I'm going to move next month." -> She said (that) she was going to move the following month.
"Me mudaré el mes que viene." -> "Dijo que se mudaría el mes siguiente."

- Will have -> would have
"By Monday I will have finished." -> He said (that) by Monday he would have finished.
"Para el lunes habré terminado." -> "Dijo que para el lunes habría terminado."

Modales (cambios habituales)
- can -> could
"I can swim." -> He said (that) he could swim.
"Puedo nadar." -> "Dijo que podía nadar."

- may -> might
"She may be late." -> He said (that) she might be late.
"Puede que ella llegue tarde." -> "Dijo que podría llegar tarde."

- must (obligación) -> had to
"I must go now." -> She said (that) she had to go then.
"Debo irme ahora." -> "Dijo que tenía que irse entonces."
(Nota: si "must" expresa deducción, a veces se mantiene o se usa "had to"/"must have" según contexto.)

- shall -> should (uso formal) y will -> would

Otros casos importantes
- used to suele mantenerse: "I used to live there." -> He said he used to live there.

- Present perfect continuous -> Past perfect continuous
"I have been working here for five years." -> He said (that) he had been working there for five years.

- Directo: "I live in Rome." -> Reportado: He says (that) he lives in Rome.

- "The earth goes around the sun." -> He said (that) the earth goes around the sun.

3) Cuando la información sigue siendo verdadera ahora.
- Directo: "I have lost my passport." (si aún no lo ha recuperado) -> She says she has lost her passport.

- I -> he / she
- me -> him / her
- my -> his / her
- we -> they
- our -> their
- you -> he / she / I / they (depende del contexto)

Ejemplos:
- Directo: "I will help you." -> Reportado: He said (that) he would help me.
Traducción: "Te ayudaré." -> "Dijo que me ayudaría."

- Directo: "We are moving next week." -> They said (that) they were moving the following week.
Traducción: "Nos mudamos la semana que viene." -> "Dijeron que se mudaban la semana siguiente."

Atención con "you":
- Profesor a alumno: "You must finish this." -> He told me I had to finish it.
- General: "You shouldn't smoke." -> He said that you shouldn't smoke (o He said people shouldn't smoke). Traducción dependerá del sentido.

Cambios en expresiones de tiempo y lugar

- today -> that day
- tomorrow -> the next day / the following day
- yesterday -> the day before / the previous day
- now -> then
- here -> there
- this -> that
- these -> those
- ago -> before
- next week -> the following week / the week after
- last week -> the week before / the previous week

Ejemplo:
- Directo: "I met him yesterday." -> Ella dijo (que) she had met him the day before.

Preguntas, mandatos y exclamaciones

Preguntas de sí/no
- Se usan "if" o "whether" en estilo indirecto; se elimina la inversión.
Directo: "Did you see him?" -> He asked me if/whether I had seen him.

Directo: "Where do you live?" -> He asked where I lived.
Traducción: "¿Dónde vives?" -> "Me preguntó dónde vivía."

Mandatos y pedidos
- Imperativos se transforman a una estructura con "to + infinitive"; negativos usan "not + infinitive".
Directo: "Close the door, please." -> He told me to close the door.
Directo: "Don't be late." -> He told me not to be late.
Traducción: "Cierra la puerta, por favor." -> "Me dijo que cerrara la puerta."

Sugerencias con "Let's"
- "Let's" suele reportarse con "suggest" + "that + subject + (should) + base verb" o con el gerundio.
Directo: "Let's go to the cinema." -> He suggested (that) we go to the cinema / He suggested going to the cinema.

Directo: "What a beautiful house!" -> She exclaimed (that) it was a beautiful house.
Traducción: "¡Qué casa tan bonita!" -> "Exclamó que era una casa preciosa."

Condicionales y "wish" en estilo indirecto

Condicionales (resumen práctico)
- First conditional (If + present, will) suele retroceder: "If you study, you will pass." -> He said that if I studied I would pass.
Traducción: "Si estudias, aprobarás." -> "Dijo que si estudiaba aprobaría."

- Second conditional (If + past subjunctive, would) normalmente se mantiene (el subjuntivo se mantiene en inglés): "If I were you, I wouldn't do that." -> He said that if he were me he wouldn't do that.
(Atención: cuidado con pronombres: "If I were you" requiere adaptar la persona según el contexto.)

- Third conditional (If + past perfect, would have) mantiene la estructura: "If I had known, I would have helped you." -> He said that if he had known he would have helped me.

Wish/hope/desires
- "I wish I had more time." -> He said (that) he wished he had more time.
- "I hope I'll pass." -> He said he hoped he would pass.

Verbos de reporte y estructuras especiales

Diferencia práctica entre say y tell
- say: no obliga objeto directo. "He said (that) ..." o "He said to me ..."
- tell: exige objeto. "He told me (that) ..."

Ejemplos:
- Directo: "Please be quiet," she said to the children. -> She told the children to be quiet.

- promise (promise to + infinitive) -> "I will help you." -> He promised to help me / He promised (that) he would help me.
- offer (offer to + infinitive) -> "I'll carry that for you." -> He offered to carry it for me.
- refuse (refuse to + infinitive) -> "I won't do it." -> She refused to do it.
- advise (advise + object + to-inf / advise that + subjunctive/should) -> "You should see a doctor." -> He advised me to see a doctor / He advised that I should see a doctor.
- suggest (suggest + -ing / suggest that + subjunctive) -> "Let's try again." -> He suggested trying again / He suggested that we try again.
- insist / demand (insist that + subjunctive / insist on + -ing) -> "You must leave now." -> He insisted that I leave at once / He insisted on my leaving at once.

- Incorrecto: He said he will come tomorrow.
- Correcto: He said he would come the next day.

2) Usar "tell" sin objeto.
- Incorrecto: He told that he was ill.
- Correcto: He told me (that) he was ill. O He said (that) he was ill.

3) Mantener la inversión interrogativa en preguntas indirectas.
- Incorrecto: She asked me where are you going.
- Correcto: She asked me where I was going.

4) Imperativos negativos con forma incorrecta.
- Incorrecto: He told me don't smoke.
- Correcto: He told me not to smoke.

5) No ajustar expresiones temporales.
- Incorrecto: She said, "I saw him yesterday." -> She said she saw him yesterday. (si el reporting está en pasado conviene: the day before)
- Correcto: She said she had seen him the day before.

- Present -> past, present perfect -> past perfect, past -> past perfect, will -> would, can -> could, may -> might, must (oblig.) -> had to.
- Cambiar expresiones de tiempo y lugar: today->that day, tomorrow->the next day, here->there, yesterday->the day before.
- Preguntas: usar "if/whether" para yes/no, quitar inversión; conservar question words para wh-.
- Mandatos: transformar a "to + infinitive" (negativo: "not + infinitive").

- Modal: Verbo modal (can, could, must, should, may, might, would, will...) con cambios de significado al reportar.
- Subjuntivo: Forma verbal usada en algunas estructuras formales (ej. insist that he go) — en inglés formal es común después de insist, suggest, recommend.

Consejos finales
