Information questions (who, what, where, when, why)
A1Information questions (kto, co, gdzie, kiedy, dlaczego)
What are information questions (and why learn them)?
Information questions (English: "wh-questions") ask for information — a person, a thing, a place, a time, or a reason — rather than a yes/no answer. In Polish the basic question words for these are: kto (who), co (what), gdzie (where), kiedy (when), dlaczego (why). Learning these lets you ask for facts, understand answers, and carry on real conversations in Polish.
When do I use kto, co, gdzie, kiedy, dlaczego?
- When do I use "kto" (who)?
Use kto when you ask about people (or animate agents). It appears in the nominative when it is the subject: "Kto to zrobił?" (Who did this?). When the person is an object or used with prepositions, the word changes (see cases below).
Examples:
- Kto to zrobił? (Who did this?)
- Kto przyjdzie na spotkanie? (Who will come to the meeting?)
- Kto jest twoim nauczycielem? (Who is your teacher?)
- When do I use "co" (what)?
Use co for things, actions, or abstract questions about events or meanings. Co is also used in many fixed expressions.
Examples:
- Co robisz? (What are you doing?)
- Co to znaczy? (What does this mean?)
- Co się stało? (What happened?)
- When do I use "gdzie" (where)?
Use gdzie to ask about location (place). If you ask about direction or destination use dokąd (to where). If you ask about origin use skąd (from where).
Examples:
- Gdzie mieszkasz? (Where do you live?)
- Gdzie jest stacja? (Where is the station?)
- Dokąd idziesz? (Where are you going?) — contrast with Gdzie jesteś? (Where are you?)
- Skąd jesteś? (Where are you from?)
- When do I use "kiedy" (when)?
Use kiedy to ask about time: a point in time, a date or a moment.
Examples:
- Kiedy zaczyna się film? (When does the film start?)
- Kiedy wracasz do domu? (When are you coming home?)
- Kiedy się urodziłeś? (When were you born?)
- When do I use "dlaczego" (why)?
Use dlaczego to ask for a reason or cause. Common alternatives: czemu (colloquial) and po co (asks purpose/intention rather than cause).
Examples:
- Dlaczego się spóźniłeś? (Why were you late?)
- Czemu nie przyszłaś? (Why didn’t you come?) — more casual
- Po co kupiłeś bilet? (What did you buy the ticket for? / For what purpose?)
How do I form information questions in Polish?
- Basic pattern in main questions: question word + finite verb + subject + objects/adverbials. Polish is flexible, but the question word usually comes at the beginning:
- Kiedy przyjedziesz? (When will you arrive?)
- Co zrobiłeś? (What did you do?)
- Gdzie jest biblioteka? (Where is the library?)
- You do NOT need an auxiliary (like English 'do') to form questions. Change word order and/or intonation.
- Statement: Ty idziesz do kina. (You are going to the cinema.)
- Question: Kiedy idziesz do kina? (When are you going to the cinema?)
- Do not use czy with wh-questions. Czy makes yes/no questions; it is not used together with kto/co/gdzie/kiedy/dlaczego. Wrong: *Czy gdzie jest stacja? Correct: Gdzie jest stacja?
- Embedded (indirect) questions: when the question is inside a larger sentence, the question word stays but the clause behaves like a statement:
- Nie wiem, gdzie on jest. (I don’t know where he is.)
- Powiedz mi, dlaczego się spóźniłeś. (Tell me why you were late.)
Do I change word forms (cases) for these question words?
Yes — especially for kto and co, which decline depending on their grammatical role.
- Kto (nominative, subject) → kogo (genitive/accusative object), komu (dative), kim (instrumental, usually used with preposition z: z kim), o kim (about whom).
Examples:
- Kto przyszedł? (Who came?) — subject
- Kogo widziałeś? (Whom did you see?) — object
- Komu dałeś prezent? (To whom did you give the gift?) — dative
- Z kim rozmawiasz? (With whom are you talking?) — instrumental with preposition
- Co (nominative/accusative for ‘what’) → czego (genitive), czemu (dative), czym (instrumental), o czym (about what).
Examples:
- Co kupiłeś? (What did you buy?) — direct object
- Czego się boisz? (What are you afraid of?) — genitive (common after certain verbs)
- Z czym idziesz? (What are you taking with you?) — instrumental
- O czym mówicie? (What are you talking about?) — locative/"about"
- Gdzie, kiedy, dlaczego usually do not decline. For direction or origin, use dokąd/skąd.
How do I answer these questions? (short answers and common replies)
Short answers are common and natural in Polish.
- Kto? — Marek. / Ja. / Nikt. (Marek. / Me. / Nobody.)
- Co? — Książkę. / Nic. / Nowy telefon. (A book. / Nothing. / A new phone.)
- Gdzie? — W domu. / Na przystanku. / W sklepie. (At home. / At the bus stop. / In the shop.)
- Kiedy? — Jutro. / O ósmej. / W zeszły piątek. (Tomorrow. / At eight. / Last Friday.)
- Dlaczego? — Bo było zimno. / Ponieważ zapomniałem. (Because it was cold. / Because I forgot.)
Note on reasons: informal conversations often use "bo" (because). More formal or careful speech uses "ponieważ" or the full phrase "dlatego że".
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using co for a person instead of kto: *Co przyszło? — wrong when you mean a person. Correct: Kto przyszedł?
- Forgetting to use the correct case (kogo, komu, czego, czym) when the question word is an object or used with a preposition: e.g., *Kto widziałeś? — wrong. Correct: Kogo widziałeś?
- Mixing up gdzie / dokąd / skąd:
- Gdzie jesteś? (Where are you?) — location
- Dokąd idziesz? (Where are you going?) — direction/destination
- Skąd przyjechałeś? (Where did you come from?) — origin
- Using czy with wh-questions: *Czy gdzie jest księgarnia? — wrong.
- Confusing dlaczego (reason) with po co (purpose):
- Dlaczego kupiłeś parasol? — Because it was raining (reason).
- Po co kupiłeś parasol? — To avoid getting wet (purpose).
- Translating English word order literally. Polish is more flexible; put the question word first and conjugate the verb normally.
Can you give many examples of each word?
- KTO / KOGO / KOMU / KIM / O KIM
- Kto to powiedział? (Who said that?)
- Kto tam stoi? (Who is standing there?)
- Kogo szukasz? (Whom are you looking for?)
- Komu dałaś klucz? (To whom did you give the key?)
- Z kim idziesz na spacer? (With whom are you going for a walk?)
- O kim rozmawiacie? (Who are you talking about?)
- Kim on jest? (Who is he? — literally: “By what [profession/role] is he?”)
- CO / CZEGO / CZEMU / CZYM / O CO / O CZYM
- Co robisz? (What are you doing?)

Which other question words should I remember?
- jak — how (Jak masz na imię? — What is your name? / literally: How are you called?)
- jaki / które — what kind / which (Jaki film chcesz obejrzeć? — Which/what kind of film do you want to watch?)
- ile — how many / how much (Ile kosztuje? — How much does it cost?)
- jak długo — how long (Jak długo będziesz w Polsce? — How long will you be in Poland?)
These are often used together with the five main words above or instead of them when more precision is needed.
Glossary (simple definitions)
- interrogative/question word: a word that asks for information (kto, co, gdzie, kiedy, dlaczego).
- subject: the doer of the action (Kto przyszedł? — Who came?).
- object: the receiver of the action (Kogo widziałeś? — Whom did you see?).
- case: the form of a noun/pronoun that shows its role in the sentence (kto → kogo, komu).
- embedded/indirect question: a question that appears inside another sentence (Nie wiem, gdzie jest dom.).
Quick study tips
- Memorize the basic pairs of case forms for kto and co: kto → kogo/komu/kim; co → czego/czemu/czym.
- Practice the difference between gdzie / dokąd / skąd and between dlaczego / po co.
- Listen to short dialogues and repeat (shadow) answers: short one-word replies are common.
- When unsure, start by placing the question word at the beginning and then use the normal verb form: ‘‘Gdzie + verb…?’’
Summary
Kto (who) and co (what) ask about people vs things and change form by case. Gdzie (where), kiedy (when) and dlaczego (why) ask about place, time and reason and usually stay unchanged. Put the question word at the front, do not use "czy" with wh-questions, and use "po co" when you want purpose rather than cause. With these patterns you can ask most everyday information questions in Polish.
