Present conditional

A2

What is the Condizionale presente?

The Condizionale presente is the present conditional tense in Italian. In English it usually corresponds to "would" + verb (I would go, she would like). You use it to talk about actions or states that depend on a condition, to make polite requests, to express wishes or preferences, to give gentle advice, or to make a guess or speculation about the present.

Examples:
- Vorrei un caffè. — I would like a coffee.
- Potresti aiutarmi? — Could you help me? (polite request)
- Se avessi tempo, leggerei quel libro. — If I had time, I would read that book.

When do I use the Condizionale presente?

1) Politeness and requests
The conditional makes requests or offers more polite and less direct than the imperative or present indicative.

Examples:
- Vorrei un bicchiere d'acqua, per favore. — I would like a glass of water, please.
- Potresti chiudere la finestra? — Could you close the window?
- Mi farebbe piacere conoscere la tua opinione. — I would be pleased to know your opinion.

2) Wishes, preferences and soft statements
Use it to say what you would like, prefer, or what would be nice.

Examples:
- Vorrei andare in Italia quest'estate. — I would like to go to Italy this summer.
- Preferirei rimanere a casa. — I would prefer to stay home.
- Sarebbe bello incontrarci di nuovo. — It would be nice to meet again.

3) Hypothetical situations (conditional result of an imagined condition)
When the result clause depends on an unreal or hypothetical condition in the present, Italian uses: se + congiuntivo imperfetto (if-clause) + condizionale presente (main clause).

Examples:
- Se avessi tempo, verrei con te. — If I had time, I would come with you.
- Se fossi ricco, comprerei una casa al mare. — If I were rich, I would buy a house by the sea.
- Se loro vincessero, festeggiarebbero tutta la notte. — If they won, they would celebrate all night.

4) Advice and suggestions
Use the conditional to give softer advice or suggestions (instead of imperative).

Examples:
- Dovresti parlare con il medico. — You should talk to the doctor.
- Secondo me, sarebbe meglio aspettare. — In my opinion, it would be better to wait.

5) Probability, speculation and reported opinion (soft certainty)
The conditional can express a guess about the present or report someone’s opinion tentatively.

Examples:
- Sarebbe già a casa. — He/she is probably already at home.
- Da quello che dice lui, sarebbe la persona giusta. — From what he says, he would be the right person.
- La riunione sarebbe alle 10, ma non è confermata. — The meeting is supposedly at 10, but it is not confirmed.

How do I form the Condizionale presente?

Basic endings
The conditional endings are the same for all three conjugations (-are, -ere, -ire):
- io: -ei
- tu: -esti
- lui/lei: -ebbe
- noi: -emmo
- voi: -este
- loro: -ebbero

Regular verbs: practical steps
1. Start with the infinitive (parlare, credere, dormire).
2. Drop the final -re and, for -are verbs, change -a- to -e- (parlare → parler-).
3. Add the conditional endings above.

Examples (full conjugation):
- Parlare (to speak):
io parlerei — tu parleresti — lui/lei parlerebbe — noi parleremmo — voi parlereste — loro parlerebbero
- Credere (to believe):
io crederei — tu crederesti — lui/lei crederebbe — noi crederemmo — voi credereste — loro crederebbero
- Dormire (to sleep):
io dormirei — tu dormiresti — lui/lei dormirebbe — noi dormiremmo — voi dormireste — loro dormirebbero

Orthographic notes (spelling changes to keep pronunciation)
- Verbs ending in -care/-gare insert an h before the endings that start with e to keep a hard /k/ or /g/ sound:
giocare → io giocherei, tu giocheresti, lui giocherebbe.
pagare → io pagherei, tu pagheresti.
- Verbs ending in -ciare/-giare often drop the extra i before vowel endings to avoid a double i sound:
cominciare → io comincerei (not *cominciarei).
Note: Italian spelling rules can be tricky; when in doubt check a dictionary.

Irregular stems
Many common verbs have irregular stems in the conditional. You still use the same endings but attach them to the irregular stem.
Below are frequent irregular verbs with their Condizionale presente (full forms):

- Essere (to be): io sarei — tu saresti — lui/lei sarebbe — noi saremmo — voi sareste — loro sarebbero
- Avere (to have): io avrei — tu avresti — lui/lei avrebbe — noi avremmo — voi avreste — loro avrebbero
- Andare (to go): io andrei — tu andresti — lui/lei andrebbe — noi andremmo — voi andreste — loro andrebbero
- Venire (to come): io verrei — tu verresti — lui/lei verrebbe — noi verremmo — voi verreste — loro verrebbero
- Fare (to do/make): io farei — tu faresti — lui/lei farebbe — noi faremmo — voi fareste — loro farebbero
- Dare (to give): io darei — tu daresti — lui/lei darebbe — noi daremmo — voi dareste — loro darebbero
- Dire (to say/tell): io direi — tu diresti — lui/lei direbbe — noi diremmo — voi direste — loro direbbero
- Potere (to be able/can): io potrei — tu potresti — lui/lei potrebbe — noi potremmo — voi potreste — loro potrebbero
- Dovere (must/should): io dovrei — tu dovresti — lui/lei dovrebbe — noi dovremmo — voi dovreste — loro dovrebbero
- Volere (to want): io vorrei — tu vorresti — lui/lei vorrebbe — noi vorremmo — voi vorreste — loro vorrebbero
- Sapere (to know): io saprei — tu sapresti — lui/lei saprebbe — noi sapremmo — voi sapreste — loro saprebbero
- Vedere (to see): io vedrei — tu vedresti — lui/lei vedrebbe — noi vedremmo — voi vedreste — loro vedrebbero
- Bere (to drink): io berrei — tu berresti — lui/lei berrebbe — noi berremmo — voi berreste — loro berrebbero
- Tenere (to hold/keep): io terrei — tu terresti — lui/lei terrebbe — noi terremmo — voi terreste — loro terrebbero

These irregular stems are very common; learners often memorize the 10–15 most frequent ones first (essere, avere, andare, fare, dire, potere, dovere, volere, venire, sapere, vedere, bere, tenere).

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

1) Wrong use of condizionale in the "if" clause
Wrong: *Se io avrei tempo, verrei.* Correct: Se avessi tempo, verrei. (Use congiuntivo imperfetto in the "se" clause for unreal present/hypothetical.)
2) Confusing condizionale presente and condizionale passato
  • Condizionale presente: I would do (now/future if condition met) — Mangerei quel gelato se avessi fame. — I would eat that ice cream if I were hungry.
  • Condizionale passato (compound): I would have done (past result of an unreal past condition) — Avrei mangiato quel gelato, ma non l'ho fatto. — I would have eaten that ice cream, but I didn't.
Make sure to use the compound form (avrei/ sarei + past participle) when referring to past hypothetical results.
3) Spelling errors with -care/-gare and -ciare/-giare verbs
  • Wrong: *giocerei* spelled without the 'h' would change pronunciation. Correct: giocherei.
  • Wrong: *cominciarei* (double i). Correct: comincerei.
4) Using condizionale instead of subjunctive after certain verbs
Some verbs and expressions require the subjunctive in subordinate clauses (e.g., "spero che", "voglio che"). Example: "Vorrei che tu venissi" — you need congiuntivo, not condizionale, in the subordinate clause.

Examples grouped by function (many practical sentences)

Polite requests and offers
- Vorrei parlare con il responsabile. — I'd like to speak with the manager.
- Potrebbe dirmi dove si trova la farmacia? — Could you tell me where the pharmacy is? (formal)
- Ti dispiacerebbe aprire la finestra? — Would you mind opening the window?

Wishes and preferences
- Vorrei una stanza con vista. — I would like a room with a view.
- Preferiremmo partire domani. — We would prefer to leave tomorrow.

Hypotheticals (se + congiuntivo imperfetto → condizionale presente)
- Se studiassi di più, supereresti l'esame. — If you studied more, you would pass the exam.
- Se lei fosse qui, sarebbe molto felice. — If she were here, she would be very happy.
- Se noi avessimo una macchina, andremmo al mare. — If we had a car, we would go to the sea.

Advice and suggestion
- Dovresti chiamare prima di andare. — You should call before going.
- Mi sembrerebbe utile leggere il contratto. — It would seem useful to me to read the contract.

Speculation and softened statements
- Lui sarebbe il vicino nuovo. — He would be the new neighbor. (speculative / "I believe he is")
- Secondo alcuni, sarebbe la soluzione migliore. — According to some, it would be the best solution.

Pronouns and negation (placement with conditional)
- Me lo daresti? — Would you give it to me?
- Non lo farei adesso. — I wouldn't do it now.

Quick comparison with similar moods/tenses

Condizionale presente vs. Futuro semplice
- Futuro semplice: Esprime azioni future certe o programmate. (Partirò domani — I will leave tomorrow.)
- Condizionale presente: Azioni dipendenti da condizioni, richieste educate o ipotesi. (Partirei domani se potessi — I would leave tomorrow if I could.)

Condizionale presente vs. Congiuntivo
- Use congiuntivo (subjunctive) in subordinate clauses after verbs of emotion, desire, doubt, or in the protasis of hypothetical sentences (se + congiuntivo imperfetto).
Example: Vorrei che tu venissi. (congiuntivo)
- The condizionale appears often in main clauses (results, polite requests, opinions).

Glossary (simple definitions)
Condizionale presente — Present conditional; expresses "would" in Italian. Protasis — The "if" clause (the condition): e.g., Se avessi tempo. Apodosis — The result clause (what would happen): e.g., verrei con te. Congiuntivo imperfetto — Past subjunctive often used in the "if" clause for present unreal situations: es. se fossi, se avessi. Condizionale passato — Compound conditional (avrei/sarei + past participle) used for unreal past results.
Final tips for learners
  • Memorize the conditional endings first, then practice with a few regular verbs from each conjugation.
  • Learn the common irregular stems (essere, avere, andare, fare, dire, potere, dovere, volere, venire, sapere, vedere, bere, tenere).
  • Practice the pattern se + congiuntivo imperfetto → condizionale presente for hypothetical sentences.
  • Use the condizionale to sound polite: asking with potresti/mi piacerebbe/vorrei is very natural in Italian.
