Indirekte Rede im Englischen: Zeit- und Perspektivwechsel (fortgeschritten)

Was ist indirekte Rede (reported speech)?

Beispiel:
"I will help you," he said. → He said (that) he would help me.
Deutsch: „Ich werde dir helfen“, sagte er. → Er sagte, dass er mir helfen würde.

Wann ändert man Zeiten und Perspektiven? (Grundregel: Sequence of tenses)

Kurz: Reporting verb in past → häufig Backshift. Reporting verb in present → meist kein Backshift.

Beispiele:
- She says: "I live in London." → She says (that) she lives in London. (kein Backshift)
- She said: "I live in London." → She said (that) she lived in London. (Backshift)

B. said, told) sind typische Umwandlungen:

Present simple → Past simple
Direct: "I like chocolate," she said.
Reported: She said (that) she liked chocolate.
Deutsch: Sie sagte, dass sie Schokolade mochte.

Present continuous → Past continuous
Direct: "I'm studying English," he said.
Reported: He said (that) he was studying English.

Present perfect → Past perfect
Direct: "I've finished my homework," she said.
Reported: She said (that) she had finished her homework.

Past simple → Past perfect (Standardregel)
Direct: "I saw him yesterday," he said.
Reported: He said (that) he had seen him the day before.
Hinweis: In informeller Sprache hört man manchmal nur Past Simple (he said he saw him), aber formell korrekt ist Past Perfect.

Past continuous → Past perfect continuous
Direct: "I was reading when she called," he said.
Reported: He said (that) he had been reading when she had called.

Past perfect → Past perfect (bleibt gleich)
Direct: "I had already left," she said.
Reported: She said (that) she had already left.

Will (future) → would
Direct: "I will call you," he said.

Be going to → was/were going to
Direct: "I'm going to move tomorrow," she said.
Reported: She said (that) she was going to move the next day.

Can → could (ability) / may → might (possibility)

Must → had to (Verpflichtung); deduction: must have + past participle

Reported (obligation): She said (that) I had to do my homework.

Direct (deduction): "She must be at home," he said.
Reported (deduction in the past): He said (that) she must have been at home. (oder: he said she had to be at home – aber das kann Verpflichtung bedeuten)

Should / ought to / could (modal nuances)
Should bleibt oft should in der indirekten Rede (He said I should go). Ought to bleibt meist unverändert; could kann als Past-Form von can fungieren.

Zeit- und Ortsangaben (Deixis): typische Änderungen

Bei Perspektivwechsel ändern sich deiktische Ausdrücke:

- now → then / now → then
Direct: "I am busy now," she said. → Reported: She said she was busy then.
- today → that day
"I will come today." → He said he would come that day.
- tomorrow → the next day / the following day
- yesterday → the day before / the previous day
- here → there
"Come here," she said. → She told him to come there.
- this → that
- these → those

Reported: He said he would do it the next day.

Fragen melden: Wortstellung und if/whether

- Wh-questions (who, what, where, when, why, how) → keine Inversion, normale Satzstellung:
Direct: "Where are you going?" → Reported: He asked where I was going.
Deutsch: Er fragte, wohin ich ging.

- Yes/No questions → if / whether + normale Wortstellung:
Direct: "Did you finish the report?" → Reported: She asked if/whether I had finished the report.

Direct: "When did you arrive?" she asked.
Reported: She asked when I had arrived.
Deutsch: Sie fragte, wann ich angekommen war.

Befehle, Bitten und Vorschläge melden

- Imperative (Befehl): to + Infinitiv nach tell/order:
Direct: "Close the door!" → He told me to close the door.

- Negative Imperative: not + to-infinitive
Direct: "Don't touch that!" → He told them not to touch that.
Deutsch: Er sagte ihnen, das nicht anzufassen.

- Bitten: ask + object + to-infinitive (oder ask + if/whether bei Fragen)
Direct: "Please help me." → She asked me to help her.
Deutsch: Sie bat mich, ihr zu helfen.

- Vorschläge:
Direct: "Let's go to the cinema," he suggested.
Reported: He suggested going to the cinema. / He suggested that they go to the cinema. / He suggested that they should go to the cinema.

- Advice (Ratschlag): advise + object + to-infinitive oder suggest + that + subjunctive/should
Direct: "You should see a doctor," she said.
Reported: She advised (that) I should see a doctor. / She advised me to see a doctor.

Direct (Schluss): "He must be tired." → Reported (Überlegung): He said he must be tired. (oder in Past: he must have been tired)
- will → would (Future in the past)
Direct: "I will try," she said. → Reported: She said she would try.
- should bleibt oft should (Ratschlag bleibt Ratschlag)

Hinweis: Manche Modalitäten (z. B. ability vs. permission vs. deduction) erfordern unterschiedliche Umwandlungen (could vs. had to vs. must have etc.).

Subjunktiv, Vorschläge und "that"-Satz

- that + simple form (subjunctive) → He suggested that she go to a doctor. (US und formeller Stil)
- that + should + base form → He suggested that she should go to a doctor. (britisches Englisch häufig)
- gerund: He suggested going to a doctor. (informell)

Beispiel:
Direct: "You should see a doctor," she said.
Reported: She suggested that I see a doctor. / She suggested that I should see a doctor. / She suggested seeing a doctor.
Deutsch: Sie schlug vor, einen Arzt aufzusuchen.

Verschachtelte Berichte (double reporting) und weitere Backshifts

Bei Berichten über Berichte (z. B. "He said that she said ...") kann Backshifting mehrfach auftreten: jede Einbettung kann eine weitere Rückverschiebung erzwingen.

Beispiel:
Direct (ursprünglich): Mary said: "Peter told me, 'I'm leaving tomorrow.'"
Reported: Mary said (that) Peter had told her he was leaving the next day.
(Erklärung: "I'm leaving tomorrow" → in der ersten Reportage: he was leaving tomorrow; bei erneuter Reportage mit past reporting verb: was → was / tomorrow → the next day.)

Besondere Fälle und Ausnahmen

- Allgemeingültige Wahrheiten bleiben häufig in derselben Zeitform:
Direct: "Water boils at 100°C," he said.
Reported: He said that water boils at 100°C.

Direct: "I live in Paris," she said (and she still does).
Reported: She said she lives in Paris. (kein Backshift nötig)

- Reporting verb im Präsens: kein Backshift nötig:
Direct: He says, "I have lost my keys." → He says (that) he has lost his keys.

- Informelle Sprache: häufig weniger strenges Backshifting (v. a. in britischem vs. amerikanischem Englisch Unterschiede möglich).

B. he said + present tense ohne Grund).
- Pronomen nicht anpassen: "She said 'I am tired'" → falsch: She said "I am tired" (bei indirekter Rede muss es "she was tired" heißen).
- Zeit-/Ortsadverbien nicht anpassen (now → then, here → there, tomorrow → the next day).
- Wortstellung bei Fragen beibehalten (inverse Form) statt normale Reihenfolge zu verwenden: falsch: He asked, "Where are you going?" → He asked, "Where are you going?" (bei indirekter Rede: He asked where I was going — ohne Inversion)
- Bei Befehlen das to nicht vergessen: He told me go. → richtig: He told me to go.

Kurze Zusammenfassung / Quick reference

- Reporting verb in past → normalerweise Backshift der Zeiten.
- Present → Past; Present Perfect → Past Perfect; Past → Past Perfect (formell); Will → Would; Can → Could; May → Might; Must (obligation) → Had to.
- Past Perfect bleibt Past Perfect.
- Pronomen und deiktische Wörter (now/here/this) anpassen.
- Fragen: wh-Clauses behalten Wortstellung (kein Inversionszeichen), yes/no-Fragen mit if/whether.
- Imperative und Bitten: to-Infinitiv nach tell/ask.

Glossar (kurz)

- Direct speech (wörtliche Rede): Das Gesagte in Anführungszeichen. (z. B. "I am tired.")
- Deixis / deiktische Ausdrücke: Wörter, die auf Zeit/Ort/Perspektive verweisen (here, now, this, today ...).
- Subjunctive: Der (in Englisch seltene) Konjunktiv in Sätzen wie "I suggest that he go".
